Human Smuggling is the tragedy of the sufferings of troubled people and, at the same time, a nostalgic melodrama of the difficult aspects of the lives of a group of people in the south of Iran that have hardly been reflected in media; people who are seduced to travel to the United Arab Emirates by sea illegally. However, they face an identity crisis and get lost in the political borders with common cultural roots yet different lifestyles. The story’s moral is the need for a profound and unbiased understanding of the ten universal human values by the international audience; “the tragedy of the migrant workers in the gamble of life; a constant battle with destiny and geographical determinism for a better life”…
What you read in this book is about people in the twenty-first century who get lost somewhere in history to live and work in the utopia of the Middle East. They start on a journey to dreamland but never reach their destination or return home ever again.
Iraj Etemadi, the writer of this novel, was born in 1971 in Dashti village, Larestan, south of Iran. He has had a difficult life in Iran and the United Arab Emirates. This author and journalist has perfectly reflected the consequences of immigration and different aspects of life when one is treated as an outcast in Dubai and is underprivileged in one’s home country with respect to historical and political determinism.
Human smuggling, as a global phenomenon, is the concern of many governments in the world, and politicians and human rights associations are always adopting policies to reduce its social harms and prevent its spread. This measure is illegal in Iran, Oman, and the Emirates, even though, on the one hand, the need and unawareness of the victims of the illegal path and the governments' unrealistic attitude, on the other hand, have played a role in the formation of this social phenomenon. Etemadi is known for his reports, interviews, analysis, and notes as a critic and an advocate of sustainable development in the locally based society of Bandarabbas and Qeshm Island. Another characteristic of this cultural and media activist, apart from his journalistic ingenuity, is his storytelling ability. Iraj takes notice of a region in Iran that was not previously captured enough in fiction. The southern regions of the Fars province and the coasts of the Hormozgan region, including Bandarabbas and Qeshm Island, are the main cultural and regional settings of Etemadi’s stories. He writes about societies that have been underprivileged in many cases during history and to whom not enough attention has been paid by the central and local authorities.
Iraj has written nostalgic and engaging realistic novels about the lives of people in the south of Iran. His works represent the realities of the people’s lives and are, in fact, treasuries of a human-oriented museum, including people’s forgotten culture and customs. In his books, different aspects of this ethnography are depicted like the pieces of a puzzle and memorable scenes of a movie. He deals with human identity and dignity in his stories and creates characters who have been rejected by society because of historical determinism and do not have a safe home anywhere on the planet. The pressures of these concerns may be why Etemadi is interested in journalism and literary creation. He speaks for people whose voices have not been heard in a long time. He is the first person to bring this pervasive issue to fiction and picture its consequences.
In “The Tragedy of Human Smuggling,” Etemadi portrays the most tragic scenes of the characters getting lost in the Coast Mountains of Oman. These characters intend to illegally migrate from Qeshm Island and cross the Iran–Oman Maritime Boundary to gain the least social and human rights. A number of novels, stories, and collections of journalistic writings by Iraj Etemadi have been published in Iran. Some of his works have won prizes in literary festivals. The Persian text of the present book (The Tragedy of Human Smuggling) which was published in Iran by the name of “The Captain’s son[1]” has been reprinted for three times and was awarded Hormozgan’s book of the year prize in the coastal region of the south of Iran by the Iranian Book and Literature Home in 2021. I would like to end this note by referring to a poetic sentence by Iraj Etemadi in his interview with the media of the south of Iran that he uttered with deep sadness regarding migrant workers’ lives and the destroying consequences of human smuggling: “There is no home for the moths on the planet earth!”
